The Saluki men finished eighth out of 18 teams in the third annual CSCAA Open Water National Championships today at Lonestar Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. The field consisted of 66 male participants including four from SIU.Â
The 5,000-meter swim (approximately 3.1 miles) fielded 137 men and woman athletes from several notable programs including Texas A&M, TCU and the first place men's team, Missouri.Â
Chris Cole lead the Salukis with a 23rd place finish, timed at 1:03:09.32. Closely behind was Kevin Kluge who placed 34th at 1:03:59.01. Both Cole and Kluge displayed improved marks from last years race at Lonestar Lake. Placing 40th and 42nd respectively were juniors Ryan Lehane and Chris Phillips.Â
"The men struggled at the start and were caught up behind a big group of swimmers," assistant coach Till Pallmann said. "Nevertheless, they all fought and finished the race strong. I'm very happy with how the four swam today."
The Saluki men and woman will next be in action Saturday, Sept. 29 in the annual intrasquad and alumni meet inside Shea Natatorium at 8 a.m.Â
