Salukis fall at Valparaiso

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (21-25, 14-25, 18-25) Monday night in Missouri Valley Conference action at the ARC Arena. Maggie Nedoma paced the Saluki attack with 12 kills while SIU finished with nine blocks, it's most in a three-set match this season.Â
Inside the Match
• Neither team led by more than two through much of the first half of the opening set. The Crusaders scored back-to-back points to take a 15-13 lead at the midway point.Â
• The Salukis battled back to tie the set at 18-all but Valpo answered with five-straight points to build a five-point cushion. Southern scored three-straight to cut it's deficit to two but back-to-back points by Valpo ended the rally.Â
• The Crusaders limited the Salukis to 28 kills on .053 hitting. Southern notched nine blocks, their second-most this season, and held Valpo to a .169 hitting percentage.
• The Crusaders held the Salukis to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set and built a nine-point cushion at the midway point and cruised from there.
• Valpo led from start to finish in the third set. The Crusaders scored the first two points and led by eight (15-7) at the halfway point. A kill by Alysa Sutton got Southern to within five, 20-15, but that was as close as the Salukis could get.Â

• Maggie Nedoma tallied 10-plus kills for the 12th time this season. The sophomore right side finished with a team-high 12 kills to go along with seven digs, three blocks and an ace in the loss to the Crusaders.
• Alison Thomas reached double figures in digs for the third-straight match and the eight time this season. The sophomore libero dug out 14 balls Monday night.
• Emma Baalman set a new career-high with eight blocks. The sophomore middle had one solo stuff and seven helpers, which is tied for the most by Saluki this season.Â
• Alysa Sutton tallied five kills and five digs, while Rachel Maguire added three kills and six digs.
• Alayna Martin notched her eighth assist-dig double-double of the season. The junior setter dished out 21 assists and 13 digs.Â

The Salukis, who played there third match in four days Monday night, will now have a few days to recoup before traveling to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Missouri State Lady Bears on Friday, Sept. 28. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
