Volleyball drops three-set decision at Missouri State

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Missouri State Lady Bears in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday night. Maggie Nedoma and Alysa Sutton each had seven kills to pace the Saluki attack, while Laura Rojas led Southern's defense with 13 digs.Â
The Lady Bears improve to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Salukis fall to 4-13 and 0-4 in the Valley.
Inside the match
• The Lady Bears hit .486 and held the Salukis to a .138 hitting percentage in the opening set. Southern trailed by just one early, 7-6, but a 8-2 run by Missouri State gave the Lady Bears a lead that proved insurmountable.
• The Salukis battled back from an early 7-1 deficit in the second set. Southern hit .297 in the frame and got to within one at the midway point, 15-14 thanks to a 3-0 run keyed by an ace by Alison Thomas. The Salukis later tied the match at 18-all but the Lady Bears scored four of the next five to put the set out of reach.
• Southern again dug itself out of an early hole, as Missouri State opened the third set on a 5-1 run and led by seven, 15-8 at the halfway point. SIU got to within three on three occasions, it's final time on a kill by Patience Brown that made it 23-20. The Lady Bears scored two of the final three points to seal the set and match win.
Inside the Numbers
• Maggie Nedoma tallied seven kills as did Alysa Sutton. Nedoma added five digs and an ace while Sutton dug out eight balls.
• Patience Brown put down five kills against one error for a .286 hitting percentage. She added five blocks which marked the sixth time this season she has recorded at least four.
• Laura Rojas finished with 13 digs as Southern's libero. It was the third time this season that she has dug out 10-plus balls.
• Alayna Martin and Marissa Rossi shared the setting duties Friday night. Martin dished out 18 assist to go along with five digs and an ace while Rossi chipped in 12 assists and four digs.
• The Saluki middles combined to hit .343. Emma Baalman hit at a .444 clip with four kills against nine attempts, while Lindsey Paulsen added three kills and two blocks.
