CARBONDALE, Ill. – As the regular season begins to wind down, Southern Illinois women's soccer (4-8-2 overall) is gearing up to host the Cougars of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (5-5-4) on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Salukis are coming off their second tie of the season after battling Eastern Illinois to the 0-0 double overtime draw on Oct. 10. SIU held the advantage in shots (15-11), corner kicks (2-0) and shots on goal (7-2) but couldn't manage to find a way into the back of the net before time expired.
2. SCOUTING SIUE: The Cougars are 2-0-1 in their last three matches, including a 3-2 decision against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 13. Redshirt sophomore forward MacKenzie Litzsinger leads the team in goals with nine, a mark that's good for 32nd in the country. Trailing Litzsinger in goals is a trio of Cougars (Angel Ikeda, Megan Keeven and Lily Schneiders) with three apiece.
In goal, junior Jensen Schoch leads the goalkeepers in minutes played (727:56), saves (46) and wins (4). Bella Henderson is the only other goalkeeper to split time with Schoch, as the sophomore has accounted for over 633 minutes of play and has tallied 28 saves on the season.
As a team, the Cougars are ranked seventh nationally in shots on goal per game (8.86), seventh in corner kicks per game (7.21), 29th in total goals (31), 34th in scoring offense (2.21), 39th in total points (83), 47th in points per game (5.93) and are 56th in the nation in shot accuracy (.510).
3. SALUKI STATS: Looking to get back on the winning track, the Salukis will rely on help from all over the field to keep the Cougars at bay. Leading the team in goals is freshman Liz Brechtel with three, followed by fellow classmate Emma Spotak at two. Senior Andrea Rodriguez and freshman Kaitlin DuCharme are the team leaders in assists with two apiece. Junior Kathryn Creedon and freshman Madison Meiring have gotten great looks at the goal all season long, as the duo lead the team in shots on goal with nine each.
In goal, freshman Dariana Mihalache leads the unit in total minutes played (1,003:09), wins (2) and shutouts (1). Her 75 saves on the season rank 37th nationally, while her 5.46 saves per game rank 37th. Fellow freshman Maddy Alaluf has earned the second most time in goal (152:04) and has accounted for 10 saves and one victory.
4. A PAIR OF SENIORS: Friday's match will serve as the program's first-ever Senior Night, as seniors Ashley Moore and Andrea Rodriguez will be recognized for their accomplishments across their collegiate careers. A special video presentation and celebration will take place during pregame. Be sure to come out to support both seniors as they look to close out their final season in winning fashion.
5. FOLLOW THE SALUKIS: Live stats of Friday's match will be provided and can be found here. In addition to Senior Night, Friday's match is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. All SIU faculty and staff will get into the match for free with their ID's, while discounted tickets will also be provided to their family members.
