CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced on Wednesday the program has signed Justin Wingerter, who will be a freshman on the 2020-21 team.
Wingerter currently competes on the American Junior Golf Association circuit and is the fifth-ranked golfer in the Kansas 2020 class. The Olathe, Kan. native has posted top-10 finishes in three AJGA events in 2019, highlighted by fifth-place finish at the Hale Irwin Colorado Junior in June. Last year, he was named Kansas City Golf Association Boys Player of the Year and earned Kansas Class 5A First-team All-State honors. Wingerter also won the 2018 Kansas City Junior Championship, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and became the youngest and only junior player to ever win the Kansas City Masters Men's Invitational. Academically, he tabbed AJGA Scholastic Junior All-American honors this fall.
"We are very excited to welcome Justin to the Saluki family," Fetcho said. "Justin is exactly what you look for in a true student-athlete. He was named a member of the AJGA Scholastic Junior All-American team, which is the highest award you can receive from them for his achievements in the classroom. There is no doubt he will make an immediate impact on our program in the classroom, but will also be a key player for us on the course, too."
Wingerter attends Blue Valley Southwest High School, where he is an honor roll student and member of the golf and soccer teams. He placed 10th in the Kansas Class 5A state tournament as a junior and was Second-team All-State as a sophomore. He also helped Blue Valley's soccer team to a state title.
"Justin's game continued to get better and better throughout this past year, as evident by him finishing in the top-10 at three different events on the AJGA circuit," Fetcho said. "He is a multi-sport athlete, as he also plays soccer and helped his team win the state championship this fall, so he has that competitive drive that you look for in a player. I expect Justin to step in here and immediately make our program better."
