
Carver breaks school record on Day One of SIU Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Senior swimmer Laura Carver broke the 200-yard individual medley school record to lead Southern Illinois on Day One at the SIU Invitational. Both the men's and women's team sit atop of the leaderboard by a comfortable margin, as the Salukis have placed first in all 11 finals events. The women's team (388) leads second-place Evansville (285) by 103 points, while the men's team (335) is ahead of the Aces (249) by a 86-point margin. Wisconsin-Whitewater is in third place on both sides.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS
*Women's team
Laura Carver highlighted Day One with a record-breaking performance in the 200-IM. The Owenboro, Ky. native swam a mark of 2:02.13 to best Samantha Parson's record time of 2:02.68 set during the 2015-16 season. Saluki swimmers Deven Speed (2:07.74), Sarah Vogt (2:08.28) and Payton Parman (2:08.29) finished second through fourth in the 200-IM.
Juliana Carvalho and Eden Girloanta swam to first and second overall in the 500-yard freestyle. Carvalho swam a career-best time of 4:57.89, while Girloanta was timed at 4:59.41. Sierra Forbord and Rita Naude gave the Salukis another one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 23.92 and 24.21.
The women's team opened and ended the evening session with season-best relay wins. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Forbord, Naude, Abigail Young and Hannah Petrone took first with a time of 1:35.75. The relay team of Deven Speed, Sarah Vogt, Naude and Forbord raced to a time of 3:46.43 in the 400-yard medley relay.
*Men's team
Zheng Yang Yeap opened individual-finals competition with a victory in the 500-free (4:31.34). Four Salukis finished behind Yeap to take second through fifth.
Adam Cernek continued his impressive freshman campaign with a season-best winning time of 1:48.68 in the 200-IM. Drake Manuello and Chris Phillips went two-three with marks of 1:52.97 and 1:53.14.
Tamas Hajtman sprinted to a time of 21.00 in the 50-free to add another Saluki victory on Day One.
Southern captured first-place finishes in both relay events as well. Hajtman, Yeap, Matt Ciezczak and Cernek took first in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:24.10. The winning team of Cernek, Jimmy Dooley, Hajtman and Yeap swam 3:20.01 in the 400-medley relay.

The Salukis will be back in action for Day Two of the SIU Invite tomorrow. Preliminary events inside Shea Natatorium are set to commence at 10 a.m. Finals will begin at 5 p.m.
