CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois safety Jeremy Chinn accepted an invitation to play in the prestigious Reese's Senior Bowl today. He will be just the third player in school history and the first since tight end Damon Jones in 1996 to play in the postseason all-star game.
Despite missing two games with a foot injury, the preseason All-American is second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with four interceptions. A 6-foot-3, 212-pound senior, Chinn has moved into fifth place in career interceptions at SIU with 13. He is also second in pass breakups (26) and second in forced fumbles (6).
A starter since his freshman season and with 32 career starts, Chinn was named the "Top FCS Target" by the Senior Bowl heading into the season. A year ago Delaware's Nasir Adderley earned the Senior Bowl's top distinction and ended up as a San Diego Chargers 2nd round pick.
Besides Jones, who played five seasons in the National Football League, the only other Saluki to play in the Senior Bowl was defensive back Dennis Harmon, a 1963 draft pick of the Chicago Bears.
The Senior Bowl will take place on Jan. 25, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama, where a week of practices in front of NFL scouts and coaches, plus the game itself, serve as a showcase for the best NFL Draft prospects in the nation. Last year, 91 of the 114 players who played in the Senior Bowl made opening day rosters for NFL teams.
