ST. LOUIS — Southern Illinois junior catcher Katelyn Massa was named the MVC Player of the Week following her performance at the Lion Classic this past weekend.
Massa hit a team-best .500 (5-for-10) with three doubles, three walks and six RBI last week. She also was hit by a pitch, posted a .600 on-base percentage and an .800 slugging percentage. Her six RBI and three doubles were tied for the most by a Valley player during the season's opening weekend. Massa recorded a double in three-straight games to open the season and notched back-to-back multi-hit games as well. In SIU's 7-6 win over Southland Conference preseason favorite Nicholls, Massa went 2-of-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI. In Southern's 15-3 win over Mississippi Valley State, Massa drew a pair of walks, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run. Defensively, the Wildwood, Mo. native threw out two of the three runners that attempted to steal on her while she was behind the dish.
It marks the first time this season, and second time in her career, that Massa has taken home the MVC Player of the Week award.
Massa and the Salukis are back in action this weekend when the team heads to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for four games at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge.
