CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois softball team shut out Creighton and Ohio on Friday afternoon to extend its winning streak to nine games — the program's longest streak since the 2012 season.
Brianna Jones (7-1) held Creighton to three hits in a 1-0 victory in the first game, while Claire Miller (2-1) scattered five hits in a 3-0 win over Ohio.
The Salukis (9-2) won the first game by scoring one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Maddy Vermejan opened the frame with a fly ball to shallow right field that skipped off the glove of second baseman Jayci Foster. By the time Foster tracked it down, Vermejan was standing on third base.
After Susie Baranski walked, Jenny Jansen produced the game-winning RBI with a slow roller in front of home plate that allowed Vermejan to slide home safely.
In game two versus Ohio, Southern scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Ashley Wood that drove Baranski home from second, while Jansen scored all the way from first due to an off-target throw by right fielder Taytum Hargrave.
Southern manufactured its final run of the day in the second inning when Kyleigh Decker walked, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Shelby Hodo, moved to third on a single by Maris Boelens, then scored when SIU executed a double steal.
"We're just trying to be aggressive there," said SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock. "(Coach) Jen (Sewell) does a great job setting things in motion, doing little things to get us in a good position to score."
Miller did the rest for SIU from the circle, silencing Ohio's bats on 96 pitches. Saluki pitchers did not walk a batter in either game and combined for nine strikeouts.
"Bri did a great job just pounding the zone in game one, and Clair came in and threw very well, had command of all of her pitches," said Blaylock.
There were several spectacular plays on defense for SIU turned in by third basemen Sidney Sikes and Jansen, and shortstop Ashley Wood. Jansen added three hits on the day and Wood picked up two.
The Salukis have not lost a game since dropping two on opening day, and Blaylock sees the confidence growing in her team.
"We lose our first two games (of the season) and (the players) are looking at me like, 'what in the world?'" Blaylock recalled. "I said, you know, we had never faced any adversity until that day. Fall ball was easy. I just told them I don't care about (nine in a row), I just care about Sunday's first game. We're trying to go one game at a time and do the little things right."
The Salukis host Creighton (5-6) and Ohio (7-4) again on Sunday beginning at approximately 12:15 p.m.
