CARBONDALE, Ill. — Jenny Jansen, a sophomore from Warrenton, Missouri and member of the Saluki Softball team, received the Shirley West Davis Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Jansen is studying to become a teacher during her time at SIU.
Jansen excelled in the classroom her freshman year as she made the MVC Honor Roll while being named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete. Her passion for education is what has led her to choose her future career.
"I decided to become a teacher because I want to impact kids in a positive way like all of my teachers did for me," said Jansen. "I can't wait to be a light in my students' lives and I am so thankful for SIU's exceptional Education program to put me on the right path."
"Jenny is funny, witty, smart, and is athletic as can be," said head softball coach Kerri Blaylock. "She's another student-athlete that works hard in the classroom and has a great GPA. I know special education is dear to her heart and I know she will excel in that role as well."
As if her accolades off the field weren't enough, her on-field performance has been exceptional as well. As a true freshman, Jansen started in all 53 games for the Salukis while hitting .329 with 11 doubles and eight home runs. She was one of the best freshman in the MVC and was the freshman leader in total bases (92) and runs scored (32). Her efforts on the field were enough to get her named to the All-MVC Second Team.
"On the field, she's one of the most athletic kids we have," said Blaylock. "She plays third, shortstop, outfield – I mean she can really do anything. But again, she really embodies what it means to be a student-athlete."
When talking about what this scholarship means to her, Jansen said, "this scholarship is bigger than just me. Because of women like Mrs. Shirley West Davis, opportunities have been brought to thousands of female athletes who want to succeed in their sports. Without her, I may have never had the opportunity to play at SIU and it means a lot to me that I was chosen for this scholarship."
