Brianna Jones threw the fifth perfect game in school history, and her second in two weeks, to lead SIU to a win over Butler.
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University softball team scored in every inning, including a 10-spot in the bottom of the fourth, to back Brianna Jones' second perfect game in as many weeks as the Salukis defeated the Butler Bulldogs, 16-0 in five innings Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium.
Jones needed just 57 pitches to set down all 15 Bulldogs she faced. The Manchester, Tenn. native became the first pitcher in program history to throw two perfect games in a single-season as well as in a career.Â
"I don't ever really know (about a no-hitter) until the very end because I always feel like I messed up along the way," Jones said after she threw her third career no-hitter and second perfect game.Â
The three-time All-MVC first team selection struck out three to improve to 9-4 on the season. She is just the sixth player in NCAA Division I softball this season to record multiple no-hitters and is joined by USC Upstate's Christina Biggerstaff, Louisiana's Kandra Lamb, Virginia Tech's Keely Rochard, UCLA's Megan Faraimo and Houston's Trystan Melancon in doing so.
The Saluki offense fired on all cylinders in the win over the Bulldogs, as Southern scored a season-high 16 runs on 12 hits and eight different Salukis recorded at least one hit.
"I feel like we needed a game like this going into the start of conference play," head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "We needed a game where we felt like we were clicking on all cylinders and I think we were today. I guess I've seen all five perfect games in school history, but I can't remember two in two weeks. Bri was special today and our offense, from the get-go, was also special."
Jenny Jansen led the way at the plate for the Salukis as she went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI to notch her fifth-straight multi-hit game. The Warrenton, Mo. native is hitting .611 (11-for-18) over her last five games. Maddy Vermejan went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while Ashley Wood went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.Â
The Salukis got on the board first in the home half of the first inning, as a 2-RBI single by Katelyn Massa plated Jansen and Vermejan to stake Southern to an early 2-0 lead.Â
Southern hung up a crooked number in the bottom of the second, as Jordan Spicer led off the frame with a single to right center. After Maris Boelens drew a five-pitch walk, Vermejan crushed a single to score pinch runner Meredith Wernig. Jansen then followed with a RBI-single to chase Butler's starting pitcher Karli Ricketts after an inning and a third.
SIU added to its lead in the third as Susie Baranski led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a passed ball.
With Jones cruising right along, Southern broke the game wide-open in the fourth. Southern sent 11 batters to the plate without recording an out. Jansen, Vermejan, Shelby Hodo and Megan Brown all tallied at least one RBI in the onslaught and when the dust finally settled SIU had scored 10 runs on five hits.
The Salukis are back at home for their Missouri Valley Conference opener on Tuesday, March 12 when they host the Missouri State Lady Bears. First pitch of the twin bill is set for 12 p.m.
