MARION, Ill. - The Marion Chamber of Commerce hosted its second Mastermind Group of the year at Heartland Regional Medical Center on Wednesday. Southern Illinois University Director of Athletics Jerry Kill was invited to speak about coaching as part of the group's professional development program for CEOs, entrepreneurs, managers and potential leaders.Â
"I've always believed that a leader has to set an example and lead by example," said Kill. "You have to work hard to win, be uncommon, and have people that are willing to grind."
Russell Williams, Certified Leadership and Personal Growth Coach, facilitated coaching questions from the book "The Coaching Habit" by author Michael Bungay Stonier. Coach Kill spoke about coaching methods, creating a culture and preparing your team for crisis.Â
"Help bring your team together. As a leader, you've got to teach your people what they need to do. With great leadership in athletics, or any company, you have to make sure you take care of your people," said Kill. "You're only as good as your people. Treat your people well and reward them when they do a good job."
Kill concluded by answering questions from the audience and giving advice to young professionals.
"If you're young and want to be successful, you've got to outwork people. Simple as that."
