In its final tuneup before the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, the Southern Illinois men's golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational. Sunday's final round was canceled due to rain, so the tournament consisted of the 36 holes of golf played on Saturday.
SIU (-1) finished ahead of Power Five teams Wisconsin (Even), Notre Dame (Even) and Indiana (+13). MVC rival Illinois State (-16) won the tournament, edging out host Purdue (-15) by one stroke.
"We put ourselves in a good position after the first 36 holes," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "Shooting under par on such a difficult course really shows that we're playing some pretty good golf. I think it adds to our confidence heading into next week after beating some of the Power Five schools."
Senior Luke Gannon (-1) and freshman Matthis Besard (-1) were Southern's top finishers and tied for 22nd place in the standings. They were followed closely by teammates Peyton Wilhoit (Even) and Hunter York (+1).
"Those four guys were huge contributors for us. Peyton finished with two birdies in a row to shoot under par in his second round. Hunter and Matthis both birdied one of their last holes. Luke did the same. We've been preaching staying patient and those guys did just that," said Fetcho.
The Salukis recorded 29 birdies through 36 holes and York led the team with nine birdies, and Besard added eight.
As a team, the Salukis have shot under par in three-straight tournaments, a good sign heading into the MVC Championships at Sunrise Beach, Mo. on April 22-23.
