TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Triston Polley pitched a complete game to lead Indiana State to a 6-3 win over Southern Illinois on Friday evening at Bob Warn Field. Polley struck out 11 and allowed just three hits.Â
SIU (17-20, 1-9 MVC) got a run in the top of the first inning when Will LaRue took home during a rundown between first and second. Indiana State (30-9, 7-3 MVC) immediately answered in the bottom half; the first four hitters of the game recorded hits, and the first three of those scored to give the Sycamores a 3-1 lead after the first inning.Â
"We played pretty well from the fourth inning on, but I don't know if we were ready to go from the beginning and got punched in the mouth early," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "We woke up a little bit and played them well from then on, but we have to be better on offense. (Polley) is pretty good, obviously. We had better approaches after the first three or four innings, but we had gotten ourselves behind."Â
An SIU error led to two unearned runs for Indiana State in the fourth inning, but SIU strung together a pair of walks, a single and a fielder's choice to get the runs back in the fifth inning, getting within 5-3. Indiana State added a run in the seventh to set the final score.Â
Mason Hiser was SIU's starting pitcher, and his night started ominously when Indiana State's first four to the plate all recorded hits in the first inning. After that, though, Hiser was outstanding, allowing just four more hits and making it through 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run after the first inning.Â
"Pitching was decent," Henderson said. "Mason gave up the four hits to start the game, but three of those were ground balls that got through. He settled in and did a nice job giving us a chance. We just have to find a way to score."
Matt DeSomer relieved Hiser in the seventh and pitched 1.2 perfect innings, stretching his scoreless streak to 11.1 innings. DeSomer hasn't allowed a hit in his last 8.0 innings of work, spanning four appearances. In MVC play, DeSomer has a 0.00 ERA over 8.1 innings.Â
Southern's offense struggled against Polley and didn't hit a ball out of the infield until the sixth inning. Despite that, SIU's three earned runs against Polley marked the second-most the ace southpaw has allowed in 2019.Â
Southern's losing streak extended to eight games, the longest skid for the program since 2011. The second game of the series on Saturday was moved up two hours to 11 a.m. CT due to forecasted weather.Â
