CARBONDALE, Ill. - No. 27 Dallas Baptist earned a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with a 12-1 win over Southern Illinois on the final day of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Salukis will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming MVC Tournament and will face Bradley on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Normal, Ill.Â
"They just outplayed us," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "They're a good ball club and they played well. I thought we swung it decent, but, for the second day in a row, we got down too big early, and it was an uphill battle against a really good club with a really deep pitching staff."
DBU (38-16, 14-7 MVC) took control early with a four-run second inning and a two-run third. Andres Sosa had the big swing in the second inning with a three-run homer after the high-powered Patriots played small ball early in the inning with two bunt singles.Â
Trying to get back into the game in the bottom of the inning, SIU (24-27, 5-16 MVC) barreled up several baseballs, but one of them was a lineout double play kept the Salukis off the board. Southern's lone run came in the third inning on a heads-up baserunning play by senior Kenton Crawford, who stole third on a back-pick attempt to first base. Crawford scored on a sac fly by Ian Walters.Â
"We took a lot of good swings," Henderson said. "We had a better offensive day than the five hits and one run indicate. We can build off that. Over the last couple weeks, we have been swinging it pretty well. We have some guys who are hot right now, up and down the lineup."Â
DBU added three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to set the final score and run-rule SIU in seven innings. The Patriots shared the MVC regular season title with Illinois State.
SIU will face Bradley in an elimination game in the MVC Tournament on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CT. In the MVC's new tournament format, which is in its first year, SIU, Bradley, Missouri State and Valparaiso--the tournament's 5-8 seeds, will play a single-elimination round for the right to enter into a double-elimination, six-team format.Â
"We've known for a while where we're at, and you're ready for a new chapter," Henderson said. "Right now, we're all equal. What we've done in the past is irrelevant. We have a chance on Tuesday to make amends and have a good day. We will get ready to go, play hard, and get some good pitching to give ourselves a chance."
SIU honored its eight seniors prior to the game, and all six senior position players started.Â
