CARBONDALE, Ill. — Saluki student-athletes performed 5,719 hours of community service during the 2018-19 academic year, nearly doubling the school record of 2,883 that was set in 2014-15. Hours are reported annually to the NCAA and have been tracked since 2010.
SIU's football team led all sports with 1,018 hours of community service, followed closely by the women's swimming & diving team (979 hours).
"Our student-athletes exceeded everyone's expectations and they have proven that they are well-rounded individuals," said Raluca Mita, the academic advisor in Athletics who oversees the community service program. "As a former student-athlete, I know how hard it is to balance academics and competition, and still find time to give back to the community. Our student-athletes have done a wonderful job."
During the Fall semester, Southern Illinois finished second among all Division I schools in the NCAA Service Challenge with more than 3,500 hours of community service. Saluki student-athletes volunteered with many local organizations, including the Marion VA Medical Center, St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter and Habitat for Humanity.
