CARBONDALE, Ill. – Looking to bounce back after back-to-back losses, the Southern Illinois Salukis (4-6-1 overall) welcome in the Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (5-3-1) on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at the Lew Hartzog T&F Complex.
1. LAST TIME OUT: SIU is coming off of a 2-0 loss to Colorado College on Sept. 22. The Salukis were outshot 20-7, including 8-4 on shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Paityn Schneider and sophomore defender Maya Warrior led the team in shots with two apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Dariana Mihalache played in all 90 minutes of the contest, recording six saves along the way.
2. SCOUTING TRGV: The Vaqueros are winners of two out of their past three matches, including a 5-0 victory over Texas Lutheran on Thursday night. Leading the team in goals is senior forward Sarah Bonney with four, followed by sophomore forward Emily Zapata with three. Bonney leads the team in total points with nine, followed by Zapata with seven and forward Isabella Marinaro with five. As a team, TRGV has outscored their opponents 14-10 and has outshot them 146-80.
The Vaqueros are coached by Glad Bugariu, who is the lone head coach in the program's six-year history. He has led TRGV to three winning seasons, most recently in 2018 where he led the program to an overall record of 12-6-3.
3. SALUKI STATS: The Salukis are led in goals by freshmen Emma Spotak and Liz Brechtel with two goals apiece. Andrea Rodriguez and Kaitlin DuCharme share the team lead in goals with two each, followed by Paityn Schneider, Kathryn Creedon and Spotak with one apiece. Creedon has accounted for a team-high seven shots on goal out of her 12 shots overall (.583), followed by Madison Meiring, Brechtel and Spotak with six shots on goal each.
In goal, Mihalache leads the goalkeepers in total minutes (725:49), saves (60) and wins (2). Fellow goalie Maddy Alaluf has split the most time with Mihalache and has totaled 152 minutes of play, recording 10 saves and earning one win over that span.
