CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Saluki track and field program is looking to continue its successful start to the season when it hosts the Don DeNoon Invitational, beginning Friday, Jan. 24 inside the SIU Recreation Center.
The Salukis are set to host their second meet of the year, with 11 teams in total looking forward to competing this weekend. Southern highlights a field that includes the likes of Webster University, Murray State University and Arkansas State, among others.
"Just like with any other meet, we expect our students to compete hard, learn and grow from the experience," said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph. "We want them to use this as an opportunity to not only get themselves better, but also the coaching staff. We're closing out the acclimation part of the season with our newer athletes. The first few meets were used to try and see how they prepared themselves leading up to competition. Now that they're at this point, we're working on competitive excellence."
The fifth-annual Don DeNoon Invitational begins Friday at 10 a.m. CT. with the women's pentathlon, which is comprised of the 60 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meter with 30 minute breaks between each event. Field events begin at 3:15 pm CT. with the women's weight throw, followed by the men. Ending the first day is the women's high jump, which is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. CT.
Day two of the invite will get underway with field events, starting with the women's shot put at 10 a.m. CT. The high jump will follow the shot put, with the long jump concluding the field events for the day. Running events begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. CT with the women's semifinal 60 meter dash and will come to a close with the men's 4x400 meter relay later in the day.
"I really like the overall unity of the program in all of our events," said Joseph. "I get excited for every single person that puts on the Saluki uniform. We're just looking for them to set some big goals and make sure that we're all holding each other accountable to them."
Individually, the Salukis have six athletes who are ranked in the top-50 nationally in seven events, led by senior thrower Alexis Roberson with her 9th overall placement in the NCAA for her weight throw toss of 21.22 meters (69'-7.5") at the Jim Green Invitational on Jan. 10.
