
Women's Basketball travels to Evansville, Indiana State this weekend

Southern takes on Evansville on Friday before tangling with Indiana State on Sunday.
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team, fresh off the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 1991, head to Indiana this weekend to take on Evansville and Indiana State. The Salukis open the weekend on Friday at Evansville (6 p.m.) before tangling with the Sycamores on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN's family of networks and can be heard locally on Magic 95.1 FM.
All-time vs. the Purple Aces
- The Salukis and the Purple Aces will meet for the 61st time Friday in a series that dates back to 1984.
- Southern has won four-straight, and seven of the last nine, against Evansville and leads the all-time series, 32-28.
- Evansville's last win in the series was on Feb. 17, 2017- a 74-61 win inside the SIU Arena.
Current Salukis vs. the Purple Aces
- Abby Brockmeyer is averaging 14.0 points to go along with 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in four meetings against the Purple Aces. Brockmeyer tied the Saluki freshman single-game scoring record at Evansville two years ago, as she finished with a career-high 27 points to tie Cartaesha Macklin's 2011 school record.
- Nicole Martin is averaging 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds in six career meetings against Evansville. Martin recorded double-doubles in both of SIU's wins over Evansville last season.
- Brittney Patrick scored a career-high 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting in SIU's 80-61 win at Evansville last season.
All-Time vs. the Sycamores
- The Salukis and the Sycamores meet for the 96th time in a series that dates back to the 1968-69 season.
- SIU has won nine of the last 11 meetings and lead the all-time series 49-46.
- The two sides split last season's matchups with the road team proving victorious.
- The last time that the Salukis played at the Hulman Center: Nicole Martin scored her 1000th career point with a game-high 23 points to help SIU defeat Indiana State, 80-61.
- Indiana State squeaked out a win in the first meeting between the two teams last season.

- Abby Brockmeyer is averaging 11.4 points, 8 boards and 1.4 blocks against the Sycamores in five previous meetings. Brockmeyer finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds in SIU's win at Indiana State on March 7, 2019.
- Nicole Martin is averaging 11.8 points and six rebounds per game in seven career meetings against Indiana State.
- Makenzie Silvey is averaging 10.6 points and 3.0 assists in five games against the Sycamores. Silvey has reached double figures in four of her five career games against Indiana State.
Ranked Win
- The Salukis defeated then No. 17/19 Missouri State, 70-68 on Jan. 17, as Gabby Walker's layup with :01.3 seconds to play sealed the upset win.
- The win marked SIU's first over a ranked opponent since 1991, when SIU knocked off No. 8 North Carolina State on Dec. 19, 1991.
- The win is the eighth over a Top-25 opponent in school history and the first to come on SIU's home floor since 1987.
Lots of contributions
- The Salukis got contributions from nearly everyone in their upset win over Missouri State.
- Lauren Hartman tied her career-high with nine points to go along with six rebounds. It was the most that Hartman has scored in a game since Dec. 20, 2016 against South Dakota. She also tied her career-best with four offensive boards.
- Gabby Walker added nine points in 13 minutes off the bench while Brittney Patrick tallied a season-high 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
- Kristen Nelson added 14 points and three steals while Nicole Martin chipped in 12 points.
100th Win at SIU
- SIU's win over Missouri State marked the 100th career win for Cindy Stein as Southern's head coach.
- She joins Saluki greats Charlotte West and Cindy Scott as the only head coaches in program history to reach the century mark for victories.
- Stein, the third-longest tenured head coach in the MVC, joins UNI's Tanya Warren and Drake's Jennie Baranczyk as the only active Valley coaches with 100-plus wins at their current institutions.
Defending the Perimeter
- Southern held Missouri State to just 9% (1-of-11) shooting from three-point range in its 70-68 win on Jan. 17.
- It marked the 10th time this season that the Salukis have held an opponent below 30% from three.
- SIU improved to 3-0 this season when holding opponents below 20% shooting from behind the arc.
- Southern ranks in the top-third nationally in opponent three-point field goal percentage (119th; 29.7%).
- SIU's opponents have scored just 19.4% of their points from behind the arc- the 12th-fewest surrendered in the NCAA.
MVC Newcomer of the Week
- Gabby Walker was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
- Walker scored the game-winning basket in SIU's 70-68 upset win over No. 17 Missouri State on Friday, as her layup with :01.3 seconds to play sealed Southern's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1991.
- The junior transfer finished with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting and added a steal and an assist in 13 minutes of work.
- It marked the first Valley weekly award for the Salukis this season, and the first MVC Newcomer of the Week honor in almost two years (1/22/18).
