SALUKIS BLACK OUT CANCER
- SIU will wear special black jerseys as part of the Black Out Cancer initiative. Fans bid for the rights to put a name on the back of a jersey, many times placing the name of a loved one affected by cancer. Winning bidders get to keep the game-worn jerseys. All proceeds go to Southern Illinois Healthcare's Coach Kill Fund.Â
- The Coach Kill Fund was established as a result of former SIU football coach and AD Jerry Kill's personal experience with cancer.
- The fund assists cancer/childhood disease patients within the southern 16 counties of Illinois.
- The Black Out Cancer initiative was started in 2011 by then-SIU football defensive back Mike McElroy, who petitioned the NCAA personally for approval. SIU now holds a Black Out Cancer game for football, men's basketball and women's basketball.Â
- This year's men's basketball jerseys raised $7,242 for the Coach Kill Fund.Â
