SIU will travel five women's swimmers and four men to the NIC. In total, 56 Division I schools and 650 student-athletes will compete. To qualify for the meet, Division I swimmers must either win a conference championship or qualify based on a set of CSCAA time standards.
Each Saluki swimmer will compete in at least one individual event. Seven of the nine swimmers will partake in three individual events. SIU will also race in a combined seven relay events. Both the men's and women's team will swim in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Freshmen swimmers Lucia Romero and Adam Cernek will look to break their own school record in multiple individual events. Romero swam to SIU-record times in the 50-yard freestyle (22.96) and 100-yard backstroke (53.41) at the 2020 Missouri Valley Conference Championships. Cernek broke school records in the 100-back (47.64) and 200-yard backstroke (1:44.29) at the Mid-American Conference Championships last weekend.
The Saluki women also have a chance to best their own school record in three relay events. Southern set records in the 200-medley relay (1:41.28), 200-free relay (1:41.28) and 400-medley relay (3:41.84) at the 2020 MVC Championships. Four Salukis competing this weekend swam on one or more of the record-setting relays.
