Justin Yeager pitched for the Salukis from 2017-19 before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 MLB Draft. Another former Saluki pitcher, Henry Boeckmann, caught up with Yeager after his first season in professional baseball.Â
What's your background at SIU and pro ball?
I was a right-handed reliever for the Salukis from 2017-19. I was drafted in the 33rd round by the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 MLB draft.
Where did you spend you time at in pro ball this year?
During my first pro season, I started off in Florida for the GCL Braves, then advanced to the Danville Braves in Virginia. Both are short season, rookie ball affiliates for the Braves.
What was your favorite Pro Ball moment?
My favorite moment so far during pro ball was my first outing for the Danville Braves. It was against the Pulaski Yankees and they had close to 3,500 fans there. The atmosphere was really cool, and I struck out 5 over 2 innings.
Favorite moment as a Saluki?
Sunday of the Missouri State series my junior year. I came in with the bases loaded, no outs. Struck out the side to keep a 4-1 lead. I ended up throwing 3 innings and we salvaged the series. Also, just being out there every day with the fellas were some of my favorite times.
What is the difference between college and pro ball?
The big difference between college baseball and pro baseball is the freedom you have. In college, you follow a structure of what needs to be done, which is great for the younger guys who need something to follow. In pro ball, you are given more of the freedom to do what you need to do to be ready for a game. Most guys have their routines, and everyone's routine is different. The other thing is that in pro ball, all you have to focus on is baseball. College is finding a good balance between school and athletics, so it's nice to only focus on one thing.
Yeager, thanks for giving me some of your time, and best of luck to you.
I want to give a big thanks to SIU for the experiences and everything they have provided for me. And to the loyal fans in the community for all the support over the years. Go Dawgs.
