CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Austin Peay Governors limited Southern Illinois to three hits en route to a 4-1 victory over the Salukis on Wednesday evening at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Governors (4-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Salukis (7-6) through three. Austin Peay pitcher Peyton Jula kept the Salukis at Bay through four innings, as the junior pitched four scoreless and only allowed one hit to Southern.
J.T. Weber started the sixth inning with a leadoff double to center and advanced to third off a throwing error by Austin Peay's Drew McIllwain. Philip Archer then got on base by way of a walk before McIllwain was replaced by Nolan Monaghan.
The change at pitcher played in Southern's favor, as freshman catcher Lucas Danielewicz laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Weber and trim the deficit to 2-1. The Governors responded with a two-run eighth inning that put the deficit to 4-1 heading into the ninth.
Southern showed signs of life at the top of the ninth as Danielewicz was walked to start the inning. However, Austin Peay's Austin Carder closed out the game by getting Evan Martin to fly out to center, Sam Hojnar to strkeout and Addison Fugitt to line out to right to end the game.
Southern's one score is a new season-low, while their three hits on the day tie a season-low. Starting pitcher Blake Begner recorded his 50th career strikeouts midway through the second inning.
The Salukis will return to action on Friday, as they welcome in Northern Illinois University for a three-game home series. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
