Salukis Welcome In Northern Illinois for Weekend Series

The Southern Illinois University Salukis baseball team will host its first home series of the season when they welcome in the Northern Illinois University Huskies for three games at Itchy Jones Stadium this weekend. The Salukis won two games out of three against the Huskies at home last season.

AROUND THE HORN

Southern Illinois hosts its first series of the season when it welcomes in Northern Illinois for three games. Live stats will be provided for each game on SIUSalukis.com, while audio will be provided on Sunday.
Southern leads the all-time series against the Huskies 62-33. The two programs have met yearly since 2003, with the Salukis winning six of the last seven matchups.
The Salukis took the series two games to one last season. Southern won the final game of last season's series 8-6 on March 10, 2019.
The Huskies are off to a 7-5 start under sixth-year head coach Mike Kunigonis. Northern Illinois lost three out of four to Boston College in their season-opening series but rebounded to win three out of four in a series against Southeast Missouri State the following weekend.
Southern is set to start Mason Hiser, Brad Harrison and Mitchell Jackson this weekend. Hiser has been the strongest out of the group, as the Augusta, Kan. native owns a 2.81 ERA with six strikeouts in 16 innings of work. Harrison is looking to rebound after a tough outing against Morehead State on Feb. 29 that saw the senior give up four earned runs on five hits. Jackson is coming off of a winning performance against Morehead State, which included three strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings.
Ian Walters leads the team in batting average (.423), which is the top mark in the conference and ranks 75^th nationally. Walters' impressive start to the season also includes team leads in hits (22), doubles (5), triples (1), home runs (1), stolen bases (6) and on base percentage (.516).
Steady Presence: Matthew Steidl has been solid in all eight of his outings out of the bullpen thus far into the season. The second-year Saluki has tossed 15-straight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Having yet given up an earned run this season, Steidl is tied for first in the country in ERA (0.00).
Top Dawgs: The Salukis own the top marks of thirteen different statistical categories in the Missouri Valley Conference, some of which include base on balls (66), double plays (12) and hits (119). Additionally, Southern is ranked in the top-25 of five categories: stolen bases (5^th), stolen bases per game (12^th), doubles (13^th), double plays (14^th) and fielding percentage (14^th).
