OPENING TIP
- The SIU men's basketball team opens the 2020 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. SIU is the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will face No. 4-seed Bradley at 2:30 p.m. CT on Friday afternoon at Enterprise Center.Â
- The game will be televised on the MVC TV Network: Fox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports Indiana, Fox Sports Kansas City, and NBC Sports Chicago. It will also be streamed on ESPN+ outside of the MVC footprint (It is blacked out in the state of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska and shown on tape delay).Â
- SIU's 10 MVC wins represent the most ever by an MVC team that was picked last in the preseason poll (since 1986). In 2018, Drake was picked last in the MVC poll, and also won 10 games.Â
- Since the MVC preseason poll started in 1986, only four teams have been picked last and gone on to finish in the top half of the league standings: 1993 Drake, 2003 Evansville, 2018 Drake, and the 2020 Salukis.
- SIU has finished in the top half of the league standings in each of the last five seasons, the longest active streak in the league.Â
- SIU ranks 14th nationally (of 353) in scoring defense, allowing just 62.2 points per game.
- Via KenPom -- SIU's overall defensive efficiency ranks 97th nationally, which is second-best in the MVC to Loyola.Â
- Marcus Domask is one of only three freshmen in the nation averaging at least 13.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. (The others: Georgia's Anthony Edwards and North Carolina's Cole Anthony.)
- Domask and Shea Seals (Tulsa, 1993-94) are the only MVC freshmen with those numbers in a season since 1993-94 (via Sports Reference).Â
- In the last five games, Lance Jones is averaging 17.6 points per game on 32-of-54 shooting (59.3%). Jones has scored or assisted on 43 of SIU's 108 field goals in the last five games (40%).Â
- Among MVC freshmen, Jones ranks fifth in scoring, second in assists, and second in steals.Â
