Karrie (Irvin) Jackson transferred to Southern Illinois University prior to the 1992 season following a stellar two-year career at Illinois Central College where she was named an All-American in 1991. Jackson starred for the Salukis in her two seasons, which included the 1993 season in which she led the nation in triples with 13. Her .338 career batting average remains the fourth-best in program history while her 17 career triples are tied for the third-most in a career in school history. Jackson, a physical education major while at SIU and currently a junior high PE teacher in Marion, Ill., is the mother of Saluki pitcher Mitchell Jackson, who made his collegiate debut for the Maroon and White earlier this year.
Q: You were an All-American center fielder at Illinois Central College before you transferred to SIU as a junior - what influenced your decision to attend Southern Illinois?
A number of things influenced me to come to SIU. Particularly, the success of Southern's softball program and that I had an opportunity to be an everyday player. I was impressed with the entire softball program, including Coach B and Coach Blaylock's knowledge of the game. I thought the campus was beautiful and very well kept. I had intentions on becoming a physical education teacher and the programs offered at SIU helped finalize my decision.Â
Q: After you contributed right away as a junior, you had a breakout senior season- hit a then single-season school-record .424 and led the NCAA with 13 triples to earn All-MVC First Team honors. What clicked for you to take that next step during your senior year?
I believe with many programs, regardless of the sport, the upperclassmen are the program's leaders. I'm not sure what clicked per se but knowing that I had to contribute both offensively and defensively after losing many key players the previous year helped me focus on what needed to be done.Â
Q: When you look back on the two seasons you spent as a Saluki - what are the moments/memories that you cherish?
I've played softball since I was 7 years old. I've been a part of many amazing teams and built numerous friendships along the way. SIU was no different. I've been lucky enough to stay in contact with many of the teammates I had during the two years I spent at SIU.Â
Q: Head coach Kerri Blaylock was in her second and third season as an assistant at Southern when you were playing - what were your early impressions of Coach Blaylock?
Coach Blaylock is a great head coach for SIU and was an impressive assistant coach when I played. I remember her pitching to us during batting practice. She still owes me a sundae for hitting a home run off her in batting practice. Kerri is dedicated to both the sport and her players and that was very apparent back when I played.
Q: How did SIU set you up for future success?
I teach physical education at Marion Junior High School. I actually met my husband, who is from Carbondale, while taking classes at SIU. Aside from meeting and marrying Brent, I loved the area. There are many things to do here and the local parks and recreation areas are beautiful. Southern Illinois is close to so many larger cities and venues.Â
Q: Your son, Mitchell, had an outstanding career at nearby Marion High School and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves before deciding to come to SIU. Did you have to steer him towards your alma mater or was it more of a decision he came to on his own?
My husband and I are grateful that Mitchell chose SIU to continue his athletic and academic career. However, we let him decide where he was going to feel most comfortable and where he could contribute the most. Obviously, we are happy he chose to stay close to home.Â
Q: On February 25, 2020- Mitchell Jackson made his home debut on the mound for the Salukis - describe your emotions in that moment? How was it seeing him throw so well while wearing the Maroon and White with family and friends in attendance?
Anytime you have a child debut in something, whether it be sports, arts or life, as a parent you're bound to be nervous! Needless to say, as my husband paced, I tried my best to stay calm. I am the type of person who sits calmly and prays. I do believe a few tears fell as I watched him. Parents just want their children to be happy, if they're happy, success tends to follow. Mitchell loves being a part of the SIU baseball program. He has been blessed with dedicated coaches, wonderful teammates and an amazing fan base. Wherever this road takes him, our family will be thankful for the opportunities that SIU has given him.
