COLORADO SPRINGS, Co — The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) selected its All-American teams for the 2019-20 season. The selections are highlighted by three from the Southern Illinois swimming and diving program. The three are senior divers Baobao Ji, Beibei Ji, and Kai Hoffmann-Dussome.Â
Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the CSCAA Board adjusted the selection criteria for each division. All relays achieving 'A" standards, individuals selected to the NCAA Championships, and divers entered in uncontested events from the Zone C Diving qualification meet were named All-Americans.Â
"Despite the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, Coach Hanson (Geoff Hanson) did a remarkable job this season," explained Greg Earhart, executive director of the CSCAA. "These three student-athletes had the rug pulled out from them this season, so we are excited to recognize them."
Baobao and Beibei concluded their historic careers at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, which was canceled on Day one due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The two combined for six Missouri Valley Conference diving titles, 14 MVC Diver of the Week honors, and six appearances at Zones in three years at SIU. To add, both were named MVC Scholar-Athletes the last two years.
Baobao was named MVC Diver of the Year for the second time in her career after the 2020 MVC Championships. She won the one-meter dive and placed second in the three-meter dive at the championship meet. On the season, she won 11 diving events and held the team's highest score in the one-meter dive. The native of Taiyuan, China took home MVC Diver of the Week twice as a senior.Â
Beibei earned All-MVC First Team honors in her final appearance at the Valley championships. She claimed the MVC title in the three-meter and was runner-up in the one-meter. Ji tallied four first-place marks, 11 runner-up finishes, and two MVC Diver of the Week honors as a senior.
Hoffmann-Dussome led the men's team in diving with top scores in the one- and three-meter dive. He placed first in the one-meter and fourth in the three-meter at the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championships. The impressive performance resulted in MAC Diver of the Year and All-MAC First Team accolades. The native of Ontario, Canada won 10 dives as a senior and never finished beyond fourth place in an event. He was also named to the Academic All-MAC team with a 4.0-grade point average.Â
"It is great for our divers to be recognized for having such a successful season," head coach Geoff Hanson said. "As with many swimmers and divers, it was tough to see them not get their chance to qualify or compete at the NCAA Championships."
