Southern’s five programs to receive NCAA APR Recognition Awards were its most in a calendar year since the award began in 2004-05.
CARBONDALE, Ill. Â - Five of SIU's intercollegiate athletic programs were honored Wednesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards and four Saluki teams posted perfect Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores.Â
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. Each student-athlete receiving athletically-related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and another point for being academically eligible. A team's total points are then divided by points possible and multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's Academic Progress Rate. Teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two year period to participate in NCAA Championships.
SIU's five programs that received NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards include men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming and diving and softball. Southern's five programs to receive NCAA APR Recognition Awards were its most in a calendar year since the award began in 2004-05.Â
In addition, four programs posted perfect APR scores for the 2017-18 academic year; Southern's women's golf, women's swimming and diving, men's golf and softball teams all tallied APR scores of 1,000.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top-10 percent of their sport. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
Southern has had seven different teams receive public recognition a total of 26 times and have had at least one team earn the award in 13 of the honor's 15 years.
