Volleyball falls to Evansville in three sets

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Evansville (19-25, 18-25, 17-25) on Friday night inside Davies Gym in the last weekend homestand of the 2021 season.
Alex Washington and Tatum Tornatta led the Salukis (5-25, 0-17) offensively with nine kills apiece. Peyton Plant and Anna Jaworski shared the setter job as Plant notched six assists, while Jaworski dished a service ace and 15 assists – surpassing 1,000 assists on the season.
On the defensive side of the net, senior libero Katy Kluge led the Purple Aces (19-9,9-8 MVC) with 10 digs to go with her three assists. Margherita Giani drove SIU with a match-high four blocks, while Washington and Tornatta also recorded one.
The Salukis started the first set with a kill by Alex Washington to garner the first point of the match. Evansville regained control and scored the next three, chipping away in three-point rallies throughout the opener, scoring the 25th point with a kill by Taya Haffner off of a serve by Washington.
SIU stayed within five points the entire set, with a four-point rally to close within one on kills by Tatum Tornatta. Evansville countered at the end of the frame, scoring the last eight of 10 points to finalize the second set.
The Dawgs battled in the closing set, scoring the first two points and taking an 8-6 lead before UE scored the next six of seven. The Purple Aces widened the gap later with six-straight points.
The Salukis play their final match of 2021 inside Davies Gym while honoring their seniors on Senior Night tomorrow night at 5 p.m.
