CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team secured its first victory of the season Tuesday night with a 78-61 victory over Southeast Missouri State inside the Show-Me Center.
There was no slow start for the Salukis despite the team not having played since Nov. 14 at Kansas City. After a back-and-forth beginning to the first quarter of play, Southern took the lead on a Caitlin Link jumper with 5:47 left in the first period. The Salukis would not trail the rest of the game, and would lead by as many as 26 points. SIU found success on exactly 60% of field goals (33-for-55). This is the highest percentage for the program since Jan. 2nd, 2009, when SIU also shot exactly 60% from the floor in a matchup with Evansville.
"We really were anxious to play; I think you could see that," said head coach Cindy Stein. "I thought we had great energy and things were really rolling for us."
The Salukis were led in points by Makenzie Silvey with 21. Silvey shot 8-of-13, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Silvey also contributed 8 assists and 6 rebounds.
"We've been practicing hard, and personally I've been shooting pretty well in practice," said Silvey. "I was just trying to come in today and get myself some good looks, but also look for my teammates as well."
Gabby Walker finished with 19 points after putting up 15 in the first half. Abby Brockmeyer and Quierra Love also both scored in double-figures with 14 and 10 points as well.
The Salukis will return to action this Friday against Eastern Illinois as part of the Compass Challenge. The winner of that game will face the winner of host Western Illinois and Northern Illinois. Southern's home opener will come on Sunday, Dec. 12 against Quincy University.
