Women's Basketball Prepares for Compass Challenge

MACOMB, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will head to Macomb, Ill. this week for the 2021 Compass Challenge. The four-team tournament will see the Salukis face Eastern Illinois on Friday; Southern will then play either Northern Illinois or Western Illinois on Saturday night. This marks a return to the Compass Challenge for the Salukis after not participating in the 2020 tournament. Southern won the first two instances of the Compass Challenge in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
Friday's matchup is set for a 4 p.m. tip-off. The games will not be broadcast on ESPN's family of networks, but fans not in attendance can listen on Magic 95.1 or online via Salukis All-Access. Southern has not faced Eastern Illinois since the 2018 Compass Challenge, a matchup that saw the Salukis take a 73-59 victory. Makenzie Silvey contributed to the win with 15 points and 7 rebounds. SIU has an all-time record of 38-6 against Eastern dating back to 1961.
The Salukis enter the tournament fresh off their first victory of the season, a 78-61 win over Southeast Missouri St. that saw Southern shoot for their highest single-game field goal percentage (60%) since 2009. That game also saw Silvey move into sole possession of third-place in the all-time scorers list for Saluki women's basketball with 1,556 points.
Compass Challenge
• Southern is undefeated in Compass Challenge play, taking home the trophy in both 2018 and 2019.
• The first Compass Challenge saw the Salukis defeat Northern Illinois 82-73 in the first game, before defeating Eastern Illinois 73-59 in the second.
• 2019's Compass Challenge included a first round matchup with Western Illinois that ended in a 79-65 victory for the Salukis. Southern would then defeat Northern Illinois 80-61 the following day.
Current Salukis in the Compass Challenge
• Makenzie Silvey has averaged 16.8 points per game in her Compass Challenge career, including 23 against Northern Illinois in 2018.
• In the same 2018 game that saw Silvey score 23, Abby Brockmeyer put up 26 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Brockmeyer has had a double-double in two of the four Compass Challenge games she has been a part of.
• 2019 saw solid performances for Payton McCallister, who sunk 3 three-pointers against WIU, and Gabby Walker, who scored 12 points off the bench against NIU.
Cindy Stein vs. Compass Challenge Schools
• SIU head coach Cindy Stein has a 9-1 career record against Compass Challenge teams.
• Stein is undefeated against EIU and NIU, with records of 5-0 against the Panthers and 3-0 against the Huskies.
• Stein's lone loss came against Western Illinois in 2016, a 99-97 overtime loss in Macomb.
