CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will host their first game of the regular season at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Division II opponent Quincy University. Southern's originally scheduled home opener slated for Nov. 24 against IUPUI was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns in the Jaguars' program.
The Salukis (2-3) are coming off a week where senior Abby Brockmeyer was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for her strong play against Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. at the Compass Challenge. Brockmeyer set career highs in points (34) and rebounds (16) on Dec. 3 against Eastern, then again set a new rebounding mark (18) the next day against Western to go along with 17 points scored. Brockmeyer also headlined NCAA Women's Basketball's Starting 5 for the week.
Sunday's game could end up a memorable one for the Salukis and head coach Cindy Stein. Southern's next victory will give Stein 400 in her head coaching career. When SIU's next win occurs, Stein will be the only active Missouri Valley head coach to reach the 400-win plateau.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available at siusalukis.com/tickets and start at just $5. Fans not in attendance can listen to the action on Magic 95.1 or via Salukis All Access. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN3.
