The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of its 2021-22 schedule Thursday when it takes on the No. 8 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The Salukis (5-4) have won three of their last four games, which included its first win over the University of Illinois since 1993. The Salukis last defeated multiple Big 10 programs in the same season during the 1992-93 campaign which saw Southern win at Illinois and later against Wisconsin.
The Hoosiers, who moved up to No. 8 in this week's AP poll, have had an unexpectedly long break between games after Wright State was forced to cancel its game at Indiana that was slated for Tuesday, Dec. 21.Â
The Salukis and the Hoosiers meet Thursday for the first time since 2006. Southern is seeking its first-ever win in Bloomington, as the Salukis have come up empty in five previous trips to Assembly Hall. Indiana has won the last four meetings between the two schools, as SIU's last victory came in 1981.
Makenzie Silvey, who earned MVC Player of the Week honors after she averaged 21.7 points on 53.2-percent shooting in SIU's three games last week, inches closer to Caratesha Macklin's school record for career points in the process. Silvey is 114 points shy of passing Macklin with 1,666 career points.Â
Tip-off from Assembly Hall is slated for Noon E.T. and can be viewed on Big Ten Plus.
