CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU men's basketball team hosts Valpo on Feb. 21-22 at Banterra Center. Sunday's game will tip at 4 p.m. and be televised on Marquee Network and ESPN+. Monday's game will tip at 6 p.m. and be a Valley on ESPN production (ESPN+ or ESPN3).

OPENING TIP

Among MVC freshmen, Dalton Banks ranks sixth in scoring, second in assists and fourth in steals. Kyler Filewich ranks in the top-5 among Valley freshmen in scoring, rebounding, blocks and assists.
Balanced attack: In SIU's last five games, nobody is averaging double-figures. Instead, SIU has seven players averaging between 6.2 and 9.8 points per game: Lance Jones (9.8 ppg), Ben Harvey (9.2), Steven Verplancken (8.8), Kyler Filewich (8.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Dalton Banks (6.4 ppg), Trent Brown (6.4) and Anthony D'Avanzo (6.2).
Due to the rescheduling necessary because of January's COVID pause, SIU played seven of nine games on the road from Jan. 3 - Feb. 10. SIU is now in the midst of a five-game home stand. (These are the final two games of the home stand.)
Since returning from a 21-day COVID break in January (10 games), SIU has been without leading scorer Marcus Domask, who is week-to-week with a left foot injury.
Four SIU sophomores have all surpassed 500 career points this season: Marcus Domask, Lance Jones, Ben Harvey, and Steven Verplancken Jr. Senior forward Anthony D'Avanzo surpassed the 1,000 career point mark, as well.
Lance Jones leads the MVC in steals per game (1.6/g). The last SIU player to lead the MVC in steals per game was now-head coach Bryan Mullins in 2008.
Last season, SIU held Valpo to its lowest point total of the season in SIU's win (63-50 on 1/7/20), and Valpo held SIU to its lowest point total in Valpo's win (55-38 on 2/12/20).

Dawg Bites: SIU is 6-0 when it out-rebounds its opponent this season (13-2 in Mullins era) ... In the Mullins era, SIU is 2-16 when it scores fewer than 60 points and 24-10 when it scores 60+ (1-6 / 9-4 this season) ... SIU has held its opponents to 29% from the 3-point line in its last five games (22% in last two games) -- SIU has jumped about 50 spots in national rankings in 3-point FG% defense in that time.
