OPENING TIP
- SIU leads the MVC and ranks 14th nationally (of 340) in 3-point field goal percentage (39.3%). In the last three games, the Salukis have made 37 3-pointers. SIU's 15 3-pointers against UNI was the most for the program since 1998, and the Salukis followed that up by going 22-for-53 (41.5%) from downtown against a Bradley team that came into the weekend allowing opponents to shoot just 38.7% from the field, which led the MVC and ranked 12th nationally. SIU's current 3-point field goal percentage is the highest for the program since shooting 39.8% in 1994-95.
- Starting with last weekend's Bradley series, SIU is playing five games in nine days, eight games in 17 days, and the final 10 games of the regular season in 22 days. (The MSU game is the third game in that stretch.)
- Among MVC freshmen, Dalton Banks ranks second in assists (2.1) and steals (1.1). Kyler Filewich ranks sixth in scoring (6.5) and second in rebounding (5.3).
- Lance Jones leads the MVC in steals per game (1.6/g). The last SIU player to lead the MVC in steals per game was now-head coach Bryan Mullins in 2008.
SERIES NOTES
- SIU leads the all-time series 50-39. In games in Springfield, Missouri State leads, 25-16.
- Series trends: SIU is...
- 2-2 in its last four games vs. MSU overall.
- 10-2 in its last 12 games overall
- 0-2 in its last two road games
- 6-0 in its last six games vs. MSU decided by five points or fewer (last such loss: 53-50 on 12/31/14)
- In last year's game at Missouri State, Lance Jones scored 28 points for SIU, the most for an MVC freshman in a conference game since Milton Doyle for Loyola in 2014. (Domask also had a 28-point game in MVC play last year as a freshman, at Drake.)
- In last year's SIU-MSU game at SIU, Marcus Domask hit a buzzer-beating 18-footer to give SIU a 68-66 win. Ronnie Suggs Jr. heaved a full-court pass to Domask with 1.6 seconds remaining; Domask took one dribble and shot a turn-around 18-footer over three Missouri State defenders.
- Eight of the last nine games in the series have been decided by eight points or fewer.
TRENDING...
- Lance Jones surpassed 500 career points in Saturday's loss at Bradley. Ben Harvey is eight points shy of 500 for his career (326 came as a freshman at Eastern Illinois in 2018-19).
- SIU is 5-1 this year when it records 15+ assists and 13-2 in the Bryan Mullins era with 15+ assists. (SIU had 18 assists in Sunday's win at Bradley.)
- SIU is 7-1 this year when it wins points off turnovers and 6-1 when it wins fast break points. SIU is 6-0 when it wins the rebounding battle (13-2 under Mullins overall).
- Steven Verplancken:
- First 10G: 3.5 ppg, 1.7 reb., 39% FG, 38% 3FG, team's 8th leading scorer
- Last 6G: 10.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 42% FG, 43% 3FG, team's 2nd-leading scorer
- Kyler Filewich:
- First 10G: 4.4 ppg, 4.0 reb., 56% FG, team's 7th-leading scorer
- Last 6G: 10.0 ppg, 7.3 reb., 62% FG, team's 3rd-leading scorer (MVC Newcomer of the Week, Jan. 26)
- Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing on Filewich: "He isn't the biggest, but he's a physical presence. He's smart. He's unselfish. You can't guard him one-on-one because he gets right to the front of the rim. He works his tail off defensively. He's perfect for what Bryan and that staff want him to do. I'm very impressed with him. Going into the game, you're worried about a (Marcus) Domask, who didn't end up playing, and a (Lance) Jones, but that guy (Filewich) is going to be right there on everybody's scouting report."
- Last year, SIU led the MVC in 3-point FG% defense (31.5%). This year, SIU is 9th in MVC & 307th of 340 nationally (37.0%).
- SIU opponents shot 50% or better in the second half in eight-consecutive games, a streak that was snapped in Sunday's win at Bradley (SIU held the Braves to 33% in the second half.)
- Sekou Dembele is 13-for-15 from the field this year (87%).
