SIU beat Bradley 73-63 on Thursday evening to advance to Friday's quarterfinal against #20 Loyola. SIU snapped a three-game Arch Madness losing streak. Before Thursday's win over Bradley, SIU's last MVC Tournament win was March 3, 2017, vs. Loyola, when head coach Bryan Mullins was an assistant for the Ramblers.
SIU and Loyola played the last weekend of the regular season. Loyola won both games. The Salukis came back from 16-point deficits in each game, but Loyola held on to win. In the second game of the back-to-back, SIU took the lead in the final minutes and forced overtime, but Loyola earned the win. With that overtime win for Loyola, the Ramblers earned the MVC title and the No. 1 seed.
95% of SIU's scoring in the Bradley game came from freshmen and sophomores (69 of 73 points). (Season avg: 88%, 2nd highest in the nation).
Notes from SIU's W over Bradley on Thursday: SIU's 73 points were the most since a 76-73 win at Butler (12/21/20), snapping Butler's 59-game nonconference home court winning streak (Butler had not lost at home since 2012) ... SIU improved to 8-1 under Mullins when it shoots 50% or better from the field (only loss: last week (2/27/21) at #21 Loyola (shot 51%, lost 65-58 in overtime) ... SIU improved to 7-1 when it scored 70+ points this year (13-1 Mullins era).
