Men's Golf Places Third at MVC Championship

Justin Wingerter named MVC Newcomer of the Year. Matthis Besard and Wingerter earned All-Conference honors.
FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University men's golf program concluded its season with a third-place finish at the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Flossmoor Golf Club on Tuesday. Loyola won the conference title after finishing the tournament with a score of 895 (+31).
The Salukis finished today's round with a score of 298, the team's best 18-holes score over the two-day tournament. Illinois State, who entered the day in third, leapfrogged the Salukis and made a push for the league title after firing for a tournament low round of 286 over the third round. The Ramblers managed to hold onto the lead and win the conference championship by four strokes over the Redbirds.
SIU's top scorer was Justin Wingerter (+5), who finished in a tie for second and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year. Wingerter, who was also named to the 2021 All-Conference team, carded nine birdies over the 54-hole tournament. Matthis Besard was the next-closest Saluki in the individual standings, as the junior finished sixth at nine-over par to earn All-Conference honors for the second time in his career.
Tom Cleaton was Southern's third-best golfer at the championship, tying 10th for his second top-10 finish of the season. Markus Wilhelmsen (+24) finished in a tie for 30th, while Birgir Magnusson (+28) tied for 36th.
