CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Dallas Baptist baseball team used a five-run fourth inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back in a 19-0 blowout win over SIU in the opening game of a four-game series.
The Patriots (32-13, 17-4), who clinched the outright MVC regular season championship with the win, tacked on three runs in the sixth to push the game into run-rule territory, and then slammed the door with an eight-run seventh.Â
SIU (36-17, 13-12 MVC) got a seven-pitch scoreless first inning from starter Mike Hansell. DBU knocked in a two-out RBI in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead and scored twice more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The pivotal inning was the fourth. DBU had five hits in the inning -- four of them with two strikes on the hitter -- and took advantage of an SIU error to put five runs on the board and push the lead to 8-0.Â
DBU starter Dominic Hammel, who leads the MVC in strikeouts, struck out seven and allowed just one hit, a Philip Archer single, while walking two. Late in the game, SIU's bullpen walked five and hit a batter in the seventh inning alone to help DBU push its 11-run lead to a 19-0 final score.
"When you get behind as much as we did and you have to play catch-up against one of the best arms in the league, it's just not going to happen," SIU head coach Lance Rhodes said. "19-0 is a bad look on the scoreboard, but it has absolutely no bearing on how we play tomorrow."
Freshman catcher Cade Carter collected his first career hit with a single in the seventh inning.Â
UP NEXT: SIU and DBU play a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium. Ben Chapman and Brad Harrison will take the mound for SIU.Â
