CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois (0-6-1) battled, but fell to the Knights of Bellarmine (1-0-5) Sunday afternoon at Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. Junior keeper Maddy Alaluf held the net for Southern, notching a save in the book.
Sunday marked senior day, recognizing SIU's four-member class: Kathryn Creedon, Ellie Lewis, Kailyn Stone, and Maya Warrior. Both Lewis and Stone were in the starting 11 for the Maroon and White for the match.
"We knew we needed some kids with some experience.", noted head coach Grant Williams. "I said to them, don't compare it [the program] to where you were, make this what you want it to be. They have genuinely embraced that idea and we couldn't have gotten this far without them."
In the midfield battle between the Salukis and Knights, the Dawgs came striking first, notching two corner kicks with a close shot up top by freshman midfielder Ashley Scesniak. The Knights came into play the 21st minute, a pass off the foot of defender McKenna Hamm resulted in the center-box shot from forward Sarah Buse to the top of the Southern goal, bringing in the Bellarmine point.
In the second half, the Dawgs outshot Bellarmine 7-4 in the comeback attack. A header misread by the Saluki defense ended with a ball to the back of the SIU, finalizing the score 0-2.Â
"We played really well for 20-25 minutes of the second half, and will reflect on what issues went wrong. We're going to learn from today and take into opening conference on Friday."
After overcoming injury before the 2020-21 season, Liz Bretchel was shining in the Saluki front, leading SIU with two shots and two shots-on-goal. Following her was Scesniak (2SH, 1SOG) and sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Henrie (1SH, 1SOG).
The Salukis open conference action against Missouri State, Friday, September 17 at Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex at 6:30pm.
