CARBONDALE, Ill. -- In the Salukis' conference home opener, Missouri State overtook SIU, 3-0, Friday night at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex as the start of SIU's second season in the Missouri Valley Conference. Junior keeper Maddy Alaluf made the start in goal and tallied five saves in Maroon.
The Bears jumped in action in the 12th minute off of a Missouri State corner kick led in by forward Grace O'Keefe and ricocheted off the head of defender Isabel Burke to start the points in the match up. A one-on-one drive up the middle by midfielder Kaeli Benedict landed an unassisted goal into the back of the net, bringing the Bears' score 2-0. O'Keefe found the back of the net to finalize the game with a shot to the top right corner with 23:24 on the clock.
Southern Illinois held the conference opponent scoreless in the second half, bringing in nine shots in 45 minutes, led by sophomore forward Sam Dodd (4SH, 3SOG) and junior forward Liz Brechtel (3SH). Moving onto the attack, the Salukis brought in more corner kicks than their opponent -- the first of the season with 4-1 on the corners. Senior forward Hailey Blanchard found her name on the starting 11 for the second time this season and recorded two shots during the evening, while freshman midfielder Nicole Szidik found the field for the first time substituting.Â
SIU wraps up their non-conference season on the road at Murray State, where the MVC-OVCÂ match up is at 1pm Sunday afternoon.
