
SIU Wraps up Non-Conference Schedule at Murray State

CARBONDALE, Ill. --Â Southern Illinois (0-7-1) completes non-conference action, Sunday September 19 on the road at Murray State (4-3) in the final MVC-OVC match-up of 2021. The 1pm game will be available for streaming via ESPN+, while live stats are provided here.
A Look at Last Game: SIU fell victim to MVC opponent Missouri State Friday evening in Carbondale. The 0-3 loss, showed growth in the Dawgs, holding the Bears scoreless in the second half, outshooting MSU 14 shots to 13, and accumulated more offensive corner kicks than their opponent for the first time this season (4-1). 17 players in Maroon saw the field Friday, including senior forward Hailey Blanchard -- who got her second start of the 2021 season, and freshman midfielder Nicole Szidik who saw the field for the first time as a substitute.
So far in 2021: Southern Illinois opened up scoring in the 2-3 loss to Kansas City in their home opener, bringing in four shots-on-goal to SIU and fell starting last weekend to highly notarized Vanderbilt, 0-5 and losing 0-4 to Lipscomb on Sunday in another heavy-midfield match with keeper Ary Lougher earning her first collegiate start. On Thursday, SIU was upended by SIUE, 0-5. The last non-conference match at home, the Dawgs left answered, in a 0-2 loss to Bellarmine in midfield action. Starting conference, the Dawgs held Missouri State scoreless in the second half, but dropped 0-3 on Friday night in Carbondale.
Scouting Murray State: In a solely Ohio Valley Conference season, the Racers pulled off a 9-2 record in spring 2021 and fell to Southeast Missouri, 0-1, in the semifinals of the OVC tournament. Murray State accumulated 23 goals with the largest marginal win over Eastern Illinois, 4-0. MSU also saw six named to OVC season accolades, highlighted by 2020-21 Defender of the Year, midfielder Izzy Heckman and OVC Coach of the Year, Matt Lodge.
The first meeting between the Salukis and Racers, Murray state is currently 4-3, coming off of Power Five losses to Indiana (0-4) and Kentucky (2-3), while overcoming MVC opponent Missouri State, 6-1, in their first match of the year.
From the Preseason: The Salukis compiled a 0-1-2 record in 2021 exhibition matches, allowing only three goals. Sophomore Ashlyn Henrie has shined in her second season with SIU so far, recording one goal and one assist in the three games. The Dawgs opened exhibition play on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 to Southeast Missouri, while falling to UIC 0-1 on Friday, and turning up another 1-1 draw to Belmont in exhibition. Four freshmen and seven of ten Saluki newcomers saw action in the preseason.
Up in the Ranks: Junior keeper Maddy Alaluf holds steady at eighth in the Missouri Valley in shutouts this season (1), while junior forward Liz Brechtel tops the Salukis with 10 shots and three shots-on-goal, teammates junior forward Kaitlin DuCharme and freshman midfielder follow closely behind with nine shots. Both Scesniak and junior forward Emma Spotak have the goals in the book.
