Salukis Score School-Record Five Goals in Shutout of Western Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois scored a school-record five goals in a 5-0 shutout of Western Illinois Sunday at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.
Originally scheduled for 1 p.m., kickoff was moved up to 10 a.m. due to extreme afternoon temperatures.
After a 1-0 loss in the season opener, the Salukis returned home and wasted no time getting on the board. Aylie Haycock knocked in a header less than two minutes into the match off a perfect pass from Dana Nadda on a corner kick.
While the Salukis remained in control, the Leathernecks defended well for much of the first half. Brooke Gosse, however, found a seam off a brilliant pass from Veronica Gonzalez in the 35th minute to extend the Dawgs' lead before halftime.
SIU delievered the knockout blow early in the second half, scoring three goals in a six-minute span. Dior Knorr took advantage of a breakdown in coverage near the net to put Southern up by three before Gosse delivered her second goal of the day.
Less than a minute later, Maya Dixon broke SIU's school record with the team's fifth goal of the day on a well executed breakaway thanks to Nao Katamoto, who assisted on all three second-half goals. The previous record of four goals was accomplished twice in 2025.
It was a mostly quiet day for goalkeeper Reagan Miller, but she preserved the shutout with a save late in the second half.
The victory marks Southern's first of the season and improved its record to 1-1-0.
Gosse's two goals were the first multi-goal performance of her Saluki career.
Katamoto's three assists put her halfway to the single-season record of six.

Southern travels to Auburn Thursday, Aug. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
