CARBONDALE, Ill. — The trio of Makenzie Silvey, Gabby Walker and Abby Brockmeyer scored in double figures for the second-straight game as the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team took down Loyola 63-50 on Sunday afternoon in Banterra Center. The win puts Southern at 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play heading into Friday night's matchup at Missouri State.
"You have to win your home games if you want to do anything in the conference," said head coach Cindy Stein. "The thing I loved about our team the most today is we made adjustments and we played gritty, we played tough, and they were able to sustain their charge."
Silvey led the Salukis in scoring with an even 20 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Brockmeyer was second in scoring with 15 points, while Walker added 14 of her own. Combined with their performances against Valparaiso, the three Salukis scored a total of 103 points on the weekend.
"It feels nice to be 2-0 in conference," said Silvey. "Those two teams were teams that swept us last year, so we had that in the back of our mind. We wanted to come out and prove a point, prove who we are and show we'll be a tough team in beat in conference."
Southern forced Loyola into 18 turnovers, and scored 17 points off said turnovers. 11 of the turnovers came on steals by the Salukis, led by Silvey with four. Southern scored seven points on fast breaks, including a layup by freshman Tyranny Brown, who notched career highs in points, steals and minutes played in the win.
The Salukis were effective in the offensive post, scoring 40 points in the paint. Brockmeyer and Walker combined to shoot 13-of-21 (61.9%) on the day. As a team, Southern shot 23-of-48 (47.9%) from the field for the game.
"Our inside game is huge to us. It was very physical down low; they double-teamed and triple-teamed us at times, and our kids made really good decisions," said Stein.
The Salukis led for over 30 minutes in the contest, and held Loyola scoreless for the last 7:21 of the game.
Southern will next be in action on Friday at Missouri State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast locally on Magic 95.1 as well as on ESPN+.
