CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will look to continue its hot start to Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday in a 2 p.m. tilt against the Bradley University Braves. The Salukis (9-6, 4-1) are off to their best Valley season start since the 2017-18 season. Southern hasn't started conference play 5-1 since the 2006-07 squad that won the MVC regular season title.
The Salukis are coming off a victory over the MVC-leading Illinois State Redbirds, winning 56-47 on Thursday night. A stingy defensive performance saw Southern hold the Redbirds to 37.5% shooting from the field, and 25% shooting beyond the arc. Illinois State entered the game tops in the Valley in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage. The Salukis also held reigning MVC Player of the Week DeAnna Wilson to zero points in over 20 minutes on the floor. Wilson averaged 21.5 points per game last week.
Southern ranks third in the MVC in scoring defense, allowing 58.9 points per game this season. The defense will be tested again Saturday, as Bradley enters the game third in the Valley in three-point percentage, shooting at a 33.8% clip. Meanwhile, Southern will look to continue their strong play in the post, as they rank third in the Valley in rebounding margin and second in offensive rebounds. The Salukis have outrebounded their opponent in 11 of 15 games this season.
With 15 points scored on Thursday, Makenzie Silvey now sits just 17 points from breaking the all-time scoring record for Saluki women's basketball. The record of 1,779 points was set by Cartaesha Macklin in 2016.
