CARBONDALE, Ill. - A late penalty kick scored by Lara Barbieri led Southern Illinois University (7-3-3) to a 1-0 shutout victory against Murray State on Thursday night.
"I'm really happy for Lara," head coach Craig Roberts said. "She's been constantly battling for her contribution to the team, and today she stepped up."
Most of the match saw both teams play well on the defensive end, leading to a 0-0 score at halftime. This remained the score going into the final 10 minutes of the contest, with neither defense letting up.
"I felt that the girls defensively played strong and did well," Roberts said.Â
Entering the final five minutes, Emma Spotak got free from the Racers' defense and was fouled in the penalty area. Barbieri stepped up, and found the back-of-the-net to score the game-winning goal.Â
"She [Barbieri] is a very experienced player, and there was a lot of pressure on her to take that PK," Roberts said. "I thought she did a tremendous job of being composed and putting it in the back-of-the-net to win the game."
With the win, the Salukis have improved to 7-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play. Southern Illinois is now in third place in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
The Salukis will play their final home match of the regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Illinois State at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.Â
