CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University (8-3-3) shut-out Illinois State, 1-0, on Sunday in its final home match of the regular season.
"The girls battled well," head coach Craig Roberts said. "When we took our opportunities, we finished well."
The first half went by without either team finding the back-of-the-net. Southern Illinois goalkeeper Ary Lougher made two saves to keep the score level at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.Â
Emma Spotak nearly scored the opener in the 50th minute, but was denied by Illinois State's Audrey Brown.
In the 66th minute, Georgina Franco put Liz Brechtel through, and Brechtel beat Brown to give the Salukis a 1-0 lead. The senior now has three goals on the season, while Franco's assist was her first as a Saluki.Â
"It was a nice finish under pressure," Roberts said. "Being aggressive in the attack is what we're looking for."
Southern Illinois kept the Redbirds quiet offensively for the remainder of the match, earning a 1-0 victory. Lougher has now tallied back-to-back shutouts, while the Salukis have three in their last four matches.Â
Now sitting at 8-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play, the Salukis will conclude the regular season next week with matches against Valparaiso on Thursday and UIC on Sunday.Â
