
Salukis Unable to Slow Down Southern Indiana on the Road

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Southern Illinois basketball played its third game in seven days Sunday afternoon in Evansville, falling to Southern Indiana 71-53 inside Screaming Eagles Arena.
Marcus Domask (16), Lance Jones (13) and Xavier Johnson (10) each scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as USI took advantage of poor shooting by the Salukis who finished the game hitting at a 32.8 (19-58) clip and just 17.2 percent (5-of-29) from behind the arc.
Southern Indiana used a 22-8 run to open the second half to extend their lead to 16-points. During the eight-minute stretch, USI shot 9-for-13 including a pair of 3-pointers while forcing three Saluki turnovers.
With 4:54 remaining, Domask pulled the Salukis to within seven points at 54-47, but USI closed out the game by scoring 17 of the next 23 points to secure the victory.
In what was a back-and-forth first half of action, Southern Indiana took a 28-26 lead into the locker room after Tyler Henry hit a 3-pointer with just four seconds remaining in the half. The first 20 minutes included 10 lead changes and six ties with neither team leading by more than four points.
Jones led the way with eight while Domask had six first-half points for the Salukis who shot just 34.6 percent from the field, including 4-for-7 from the charity stripe.
The Eagles also took advantage of 15 SIU turnovers, converting the Saluki miscues into 15 points. USI won the battle on the rebounds 37-29.
Jelani Simmons scored a team-high 18 points for USI to go with five rebounds and three assists.
