PEORIA, Ill. — Abby Brockmeyer became just the third Saluki to reach 1,000 career rebounds as the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team defeated the Bradley Braves 74-46 Friday night in Renaissance Coliseum. Brockmeyer finished the game with her eleventh double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 boards.
"Abby Brockmeyer was a beast," said head coach Cindy Stein. "I'm so proud of her getting that thousandth rebound. To have a thousand points and a thousand rebounds, that's just an amazing feat."
The Salukis (16-7, 11-2) are currently in sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. The lone two-loss team in the Valley, Southern leads Illinois State by a half game.
Southern shot 29-of-54 (53.7%) from the field in the win, including 5-of-11 (45.5%) from beyond the arc. Graduate forward Gabby Walker led Southern in scoring with 19 points, shooting 70% from the field. Makenzie Silvey also scored in double figures for the Salukis, scoring 10 points while contributing a game-high four assists.
A total of 10 Salukis scored in the game, including freshman Paige Clubb who notched her first career field goal, a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
"Our kids were so excited when Paige hit that three," said Stein. "That love for each other just shined today, and I'm very appreciative of that."
Southern dominated down low, scoring 36 points in the paint and winning the rebound battle 42-25. The Salukis also held the Braves to 33.9% shooting from the field, including a 2-of-24 (8.3%) from three.
The Salukis will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Illinois State on ESPN+.
