Solid pitching, improved defense and power hitting propelled SIU past Central Arkansas 4-2 Sunday at Itchy Jones Stadium. The victory, SIU's fifth in succession and completed in two hours ten minutes, raised the Salukis' record to, 5-1. Central Arkansas is 1-4.
SIU grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing, 1-0, with one out, LF Pier Olivier-Boucher doubled. After Jeremy Schork struck out, Zack Jensen plated Boucher with a mammoth home run to left field.
"Mammoth" also describes Saluki SS Kaeber Rog's two out solo homer to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning off Bears' losing pitcher Logan Gilbertson (0-2). 1B JT Weber followed Rog's blast with a homer to right, his second of the season.
Saluki senior starter Noah Farmer earned his first win of the season. Farmer (11-5 for his career) pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits. An inning ending double play with the tying run at the plate in the top of the eighth inning helped Saluki reliever Jake Combs pitch scoreless seventh and eighth innings. SIU closer Trey McDaniel also faced the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning, but induced AJ Mendolia into a game-ending groundout with a runner at third base. The Bears scored an unearned run one hitter before that on-Rog's fielding error. McDaniel earned his first save of the season and the 29th of his career.
SIU had seven hits in the game; three of them were home runs and two were doubles. Rog had three hits (1B, 2B and a HR) in four at-bats.
Saluki defenders, who committed three errors in Friday's game, committed just one on Sunday.
SIU goes for the series sweep of the Bears in a 1pm. game on Monday.
