CARBONDALE. Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team heads to Loyola-Chicago Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip against the Ramblers in the Gentile Arena. The Salukis (19-7, 14-2) sit in first place in the Missouri Valley Conference, holding a one-game lead over the Missouri State Lady Bears with just two games left in the regular season.
Southern has won seven-straight games entering Thursday's contest, while the Ramblers have their own five-game winning streak. The two teams previously faced off on Jan. 2 in Carbondale, as the Salukis were victorious 63-50. Makenzie Silvey scored 20 points in the contest, while Abby Brockmeyer scored 15 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Southern is coming off a 80-66 Senior Day victory against Evansville on Saturday. Four Salukis scored in double figures: Brockmeyer (19), Silvey (18), Gabby Walker (13) and Caitlin Link (12). The win clinched an undefeated regular season home slate for just the third time in program history. Such a feat had not been achieved for SIU since the 1986-87 season.
Silvey, who became SIU's all-time leading scorer on Jan. 22, currently sits 56 points away from 2,000 for her career. Silvey is already the only Saluki women's basketball player in history to reach the 1,800 and 1,900 point plateaus.
While Southern has won the last two matchups in Carbondale, the Salukis' last win over Loyola in Chicago came on Feb. 22, 2019. Southern leads the all-time series between the two schools 12-10.
